3 Prep Steps to Make December Sundays Easier

The KidzMatter Blog/3 Prep Steps to Make December Sundays Easier

December in children’s ministry can be dazzling… and a little bit wild. Kids are buzzing with excitement, volunteers are juggling full calendars, and every Sunday comes with extra energy, extra events, and extra moving parts. But with a little intentional preparation, your December can feel less chaotic and more joy-filled for you, your team, and the families you serve.

Here are three simple prep steps you can take right now that will make a noticeable difference in the month ahead.

1. Pre-Pack Everything You Can

December is not the month you want to be assembling supplies or chasing down last-minute items between services. Taking one block of time before December begins to pre-pack your classrooms will save you hours and stress.

Start by laying out all December lessons, crafts, and activities. Then divide them into labeled gallon bags, small-group bins, or stackable trays, one set per week. Include everything needed for that week’s lesson: supplies, instructions, and any printed materials. If you have multiple age groups, color-code the bins to make Sunday-morning setup quick and foolproof.

This one step transforms Sunday mornings. Instead of volunteers asking, “Where’s the glue?” or “Are we doing this craft today?”, everything is ready to grab and go. It also makes it easier for new volunteers or subs to jump in with confidence, because the instructions and supplies are already bundled for them.

Think of these pre-packed bins as small gifts you’re giving your future self—and your team.

2. Create a December Supply Station

December has its own rhythm, its own energy, and its own unique needs, so give it its own supply station. This is simply a designated table, cart, or shelf stocked with everything you know you’ll reach for all month long.

Your supply station might include:

• Christmas craft extras (glue sticks, tape, scissors, glitter-free sparkle options!)
• Holiday-themed coloring pages
• Spare name tags
• Pre-pulled Scripture cards
• Quiet activities for high-energy weeks
• Small prizes or stickers for celebrating participation
• Extra tissues and hand sanitizer
• A small stack of parent communication cards or invitations

When volunteers know exactly where to find what they need, even during the busiest services, they feel empowered and supported. A supply station also prevents unnecessary clutter in classrooms, where December décor can already feel overwhelming for kids with sensory sensitivities.

And here’s a bonus: having a visible, well-stocked supply station communicates intentionality. It shows your team that you planned for the fast-paced month and are looking out for their success.

3. Prep a Calming and Connection-Focused Classroom Environment

December brings heightened excitement, increased noise, extra energy, and sometimes extra anxiety. One of the best ways to prepare for the month is to set up your classroom in a way that supports calm, connection, and engagement.

You don’t have to overhaul your space. A few simple tweaks make a huge difference:

• Adjust the lighting. Softer or warmer lighting helps overstimulated kids settle more easily.
• Choose music intentionally. A peaceful Christmas playlist playing as kids enter can set a grounding tone.
• Create a quick “calm corner.” Include a coloring page, a fidget tool, or a soft seat where kids can reset for one or two minutes.
• Simplify your visual space. December decorations can be fun, but too many can overwhelm some kids, especially those with sensory sensitivities.
• Plan predictable transitions. Write your schedule on a small whiteboard. It helps kids know what to expect, reducing meltdown moments.

This step isn’t about making your room more “Pinterest-worthy.” It’s about preparing an environment where kids feel safe, grounded, and ready to hear about Jesus, even on the most energetic Sundays of the year.

And your volunteers will thank you. A calm environment sets them up for success, too.

A December You Can Actually Enjoy

December will always be full, but it doesn’t have to feel frantic. With a few intentional prep steps, your Sundays can feel smoother, calmer, and more joy-filled. Pre-pack your lessons, create a supply station, and create a classroom environment that helps kids thrive. These small investments will allow you to focus on what matters most: sharing the hope of Jesus with the next generation during one of the most meaningful months of the year.
