Summer can be one of the BEST times to create memorable moments in kids' ministry.
Last summer, our team decided to turn the month of June into a “Summer of Fun” with themed Sunday Fundays each week. The goal wasn’t to create huge productions or spend a ton of money. We simply wanted to help kids feel excited about coming to church while reinforcing biblical truths in creative ways.
The result? Kids invited friends, families got involved, and our classrooms were filled with laughter, connection, and meaningful conversations about Jesus.
If you’re looking for easy summer ideas for your ministry, here are five themes that worked really well for us!
Sundaes & Silly Socks
For our first Sunday of summer, we invited kids to wear their silliest socks to church. Bright colors, mismatched pairs, crazy patterns—you name it!
We celebrated summer with ice cream sundaes during kids' church.
We connected the day to Psalm 139:14 and talked about how God made each of us unique and special. Just like every pair of socks (and every sundae) looked different, every child in our ministry was created intentionally by God.
Easy Ideas:
● Create a “crazy sock parade”
● Give small prizes for the funniest or most creative socks
● Set up a simple sundae bar with toppings
Let’s Glow for God!
This was probably one of the biggest hits of the summer.
We invited kids to wear neon or glow-in-the-dark clothing and transformed our space with black lights, glow sticks, and upbeat worship music.
Our lesson focused on Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the world.”
We talked about how we can shine God’s light at school, at home, and with our friends. The visual connection worked perfectly because the kids could literally SEE the glow in the darkness.
Easy Ideas:
● Glow stick dance party
● Neon decorations from the dollar store
● Flashlight games or glow object hunts
Crazy Hair — Don’t Care!
For week three, we encouraged kids to show up with their craziest hairstyles possible.
Mohawks. Colored spray. Pipe cleaners. Glitter. We saw it all!
We paired the day with a camping theme by setting up a tent for preschool and a pretend campfire area for elementary kids. We even made s’mores for snack time.
The lesson focused on 1 Samuel 16:7: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
It was a great reminder that while crazy hair is fun, what matters most to God is who we are on the inside.
Easy Ideas:
● Crazy hair photo booth
● Camping-themed worship set
● Indoor flashlight fun
● “Campfire” small group circles
Luau of Love!
This Sunday brought all the tropical fun.
Kids wore Hawaiian shirts, leis, sunglasses, and bright summer colors. We handed out leis at check-in and ended the morning with a limbo competition.
Our teaching centered around Jesus’ command to “love one another” in John 13:34-35. We talked about how love helps people feel welcomed, included, and cared for.
This theme worked especially well because it naturally created a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Easy Ideas:
● Tropical decorations
● Limbo contests
● Fruit snacks or popsicles
PJs & Pancakes
We wrapped up the month with one of the coziest Sundays of the year.
Kids wore their pajamas to church, brought blankets or stuffed animals, and enjoyed pancakes together.
The lesson focused on Matthew 11:28, where Jesus says, “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
Summer can be busy and chaotic for families, so this was a sweet opportunity to remind kids that Jesus brings peace, comfort, and rest to our hearts.
Easy Ideas:
● Pancake breakfast station
● Cozy reading corners
● Calm worship moments
● Stuffed animal “buddy” seating
The best part about Summer Sunday Fundays is that they don’t have to be expensive or elaborate to make a lasting impact.
Kids remember moments when church feels joyful, welcoming, and full of life. And when those moments are connected to biblical truth, they become even more meaningful.
Sometimes a glow stick, a silly sock, or a pancake breakfast can open the door for a child to experience the love of Jesus in a way they’ll never forget.
