The KidzMatter Blog/5 Simple but Not Always Easy Ways to Follow Up

Following up with kids and families after a fall outreach event is just as important as the event itself. Your outreach created a connection, but now it’s time to build on that and turn visitors into regular attendees. Effective follow-up shows families that your church genuinely cares about them—not just during the event but in the weeks and months that follow.

While follow-up can seem daunting, there are simple steps you can take to keep the momentum going and ensure the families you reached continue to engage with your ministry. Here are five simple—but not always easy—ways to excel at follow-up after your event.

1. Personalized Communication

After your event, send a personalized note or email to every family that attended. Mention something specific about their child or their experience at the event, such as a fun moment or something the child enjoyed. Personal touches show families they are more than just numbers—you care about them individually. This simple gesture makes a lasting impression.

2. Invite Them Back

Don’t let your outreach event be the only connection point. Within a week, invite the families to a specific upcoming church event, whether it’s a family service, a kids’ program, or a fun church gathering. A clear invitation to engage in future activities helps foster ongoing relationships.

3. Follow-Up Phone Call or Text

A quick phone call or text can be a great way to connect. Reach out to see how they enjoyed the event and ask if they have any questions about your children’s ministry. This kind of direct communication builds trust and keeps the relationship going.

4. Provide a Take-Home Resource

Send each family home with a resource that helps extend the message of your event, such as a family devotional, Bible-based activity, or helpful parenting tips. A resource packet is a reminder of your church’s ongoing support for their spiritual growth.

5. Stay Connected Through Social Media

Encourage families to follow your children’s ministry social media pages. Regularly post about upcoming events, spiritual content for kids, and family resources. This keeps your church on their radar and offers multiple opportunities for ongoing engagement.

Consistent follow-up is the key to turning first-time visitors into fully connected families within your church community. While it may take time and effort, each interaction reinforces that your ministry is a place where they are known, valued, and loved. By being intentional in your follow-up, you not only build relationships but also create opportunities for spiritual growth that can impact families for a lifetime. Remember, it’s not just about the event—it’s about the journey that follows.
