The KidzMatter Blog/7 Lies the Enemy Tries to Get KidMin Leaders to Believe—and How to Combat Them

Children’s ministry is sacred work—and because of that, it’s also contested ground. Few leaders face more quiet discouragement, internal pressure, and spiritual resistance than those called to disciple kids. The enemy knows the power of shaping faith early, so he works subtly, persistently, and often internally. Here are seven common lies Satan tries to get KidMin leaders to believe—and how to combat each one with truth.

Lie #1: “What you’re doing doesn’t really matter.”
This is one of the enemy’s oldest tactics. When results feel invisible, and fruit feels slow, it’s easy to question significance. The truth is that children’s ministry is frontline disciple-making. Seeds planted today often bear fruit decades later. Combat this lie by anchoring yourself in eternity, not immediacy. Faithfulness matters more than feedback.

Lie #2: “You’re not qualified enough.”
The enemy loves to magnify what you lack—experience, training, confidence, personality. God, however, delights in using willing hearts over polished résumés. Remember that calling always precedes confidence. Combat this lie by leaning into obedience, not comparison.

Lie #3: “Everyone else is doing this better than you.”
Comparison is a thief of joy and clarity. Social media highlights can distort reality and breed insecurity. The truth is that God called you to your church, your kids, and your context. Combat comparison by staying focused on the assignment God has placed directly in front of you.

Lie #4: “You have to do everything yourself.”
This lie leads straight to burnout. The enemy wants isolated leaders carrying unsustainable loads. God designed ministry to be shared. Combat this lie by inviting others into ownership, empowering volunteers, and remembering that the church is a body—not a solo act.

Lie #5: “If you rest, you’re being lazy or selfish.”
Rest is not weakness; it’s obedience. Exhausted leaders are easier targets for discouragement and temptation. Combat this lie by embracing rhythms of rest and Sabbath, trusting that God is still at work even when you pause.

Lie #6: “If you were really called, this wouldn’t be so hard.”
Difficulty does not mean disqualification. In fact, resistance often confirms that the work matters. Combat this lie by reframing hardship as part of faithful ministry, not a sign of failure.

Lie #7: “You’re alone in this.”
Isolation is one of the enemy’s most effective weapons. The truth is that you are part of a global community of leaders walking the same road. Combat this lie by seeking connection, coaching, and encouragement from others who understand the calling.

At KidzMatter, we believe one of the most important things we can do is help leaders recognize these lies and replace them with truth. You are seen. You are called. You are making an eternal difference—even on the days it doesn’t feel like it.

Stand firm. The work you’re doing matters more than you know.
