A Simple Christmas

The KidzMatter Blog/A Simple Christmas

It’s December in Kids Ministry, and you have all the things. Events, crafts, lessons, parties, special services, parent questions, last-minute needs — and that’s just the ministry side. Then there’s your personal life, which somehow blends into ministry life in the sweetest (and sometimes busiest) way. I’ve always loved that overlap. The same heart that cares for my own family is the heart God uses to care for the kids in our ministry. It’s a gift… even if December sometimes feels like a very busy gift.

This year, our church is focusing on the theme “Simple Christmas.” I’ve been letting that settle in my mind and heart, not just for myself but for our ministry. What does a simple Christmas really look like for Kids Ministry? How do we celebrate Jesus without getting swallowed by everything else happening around us?

As we prepare to share the story of Jesus’ birth with our kids and make our plans fun, exciting, memorable, and biblically rich, here are a few things we can keep in mind.

Share the awe, wonder, and perfection of Christmas

Kids LOVE Christmas. They feel the magic of it long before they can explain why. Bright lights, traditions, surprises, family time, they soak it all in. What a perfect opportunity for us to show them that the greatest wonder of Christmas is Jesus.

When you tell the Christmas story, let the awe show on your face. Let your voice slow down as you talk about Mary, a young woman visited by an angel. Let your eyes sparkle as you explain that God chose a humble stable for the Savior of the world to be born. Let kids feel the weight of how perfect the story is.

The truth is, the Christmas story is far more wonderful than anything on their wish list. It shows a God who loves us so perfectly that He sent His only Son with a plan—a plan to rescue us from sin and restore us to Himself. If you feel the wonder while you teach, they will too.

Share what Christmas means to you

Kids learn by watching us. Sometimes they remember our expressions, our tone, and our personal stories more than the formal lesson we planned.

So, tell them what Christmas means to you. Share a memory from when you were their age. Talk about how celebrating Jesus has shaped your life. Let them see that you treasure Jesus during this season, not because you’re “supposed to,” but because He truly matters to you.

Your love for Christ is one of the clearest ways they will understand His love for them.

Share the whole story

When we teach about Jesus’ birth, it can be easy to focus only on the manger, the angels, and the shepherds. But this moment wasn’t random or isolated; it was the turning point in a story that began long before Bethlehem.

Help kids see that the entire Bible is a rescue story. God created us to know Him and glorify Him. Sin broke that relationship. And from the moment sin entered the world, God promised a Savior who would make things right again.

Christmas is when that promise arrived.

When kids understand that Jesus’ birth is connected to everything they’ve learned all year — creation, the fall, the promises, the prophets — the manger becomes even more meaningful. This is the lesson that ties the whole story of the Bible together.

Have fun with the kids in your ministry

And yes… have fun! Christmas in Kids Ministry without fun would be terrible. Joy is part of what makes this season so special for children. Laugh with them. Be silly with them. Celebrate with them. Point their joy back to the God who gave us Jesus.

Fun doesn’t compete with the message of Christmas, but it can actually help kids receive it. When kids feel safe, delighted, and loved, their hearts open wide to the truth of Jesus.

A Simple Christmas Prayer

As we walk into this season, let’s take a deep breath and remember that simple doesn’t mean small. Simple means focused. Simple means uncluttered. Simple means keeping Jesus at the center and letting everything else fall into place around Him.

My prayer for you is that this December isn’t defined by pressure, but by peace. That you feel the joy of telling the greatest story ever told. And that the kids you serve will see Jesus clearly because they saw Him in you.

Merry Christmas, friends!!
