The KidzMatter Blog/Spiritual Formation/Building a Foundation That Lasts

Inside each of us is a foundation on which our lives are built. Foundations are important because everything we build rests on them. A strong foundation provides stability, strength, and security when storms come. In much the same way, the foundation built in a child’s life during their younger years can shape the way they navigate the rest of their lives.

As children grow, they will face countless decisions. They will have questions about right and wrong, friendships, relationships, success, failure, identity, and the world around them. They will encounter difficult circumstances and moments when they feel weak, confused, or afraid. When those moments come, what will they rely on?

Our hope is that kids will have a strong foundation of faith in God and His Word.

Competing Voices for Our Kids' Hearts

The world is constantly competing for a place in the foundation of our children’s lives. Social media, culture, entertainment, friends, school, and countless other voices are influencing the way kids think and what they believe. None of these influences can be completely removed from their lives, and they don’t need to be.

Instead, we have the opportunity to help kids develop a foundation so strong that they can encounter the world around them while still knowing who they are, what they believe, and where their truth comes from.

In children’s ministry, we want kids to build a strong foundation of faith that will help them navigate the life God has planned for them. But building that foundation isn’t something that happens by accident. It takes intentionality from parents, grandparents, ministry leaders, volunteers, and the entire church community.

So, how can we help?

1. Promote Scripture memorization and understanding.

God’s Word gives us truth to hold onto when life feels uncertain. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” We want kids not only to memorize Scripture, but to understand what it means and how it applies to their everyday lives. When God’s Word is planted deeply in their hearts, they have truth they can return to when they face difficult decisions and circumstances.

2. Pray for them daily.

One of the greatest things we can do for the children in our lives is pray. Pray for their friendships, their choices, their schools, their struggles, and their future. Pray that they will know God personally and recognize His voice. Pray that their faith will grow deeper and stronger as they get older. We may not always know what a child is facing, but God does.

3. Provide a safe place to talk through life’s challenges.

Kids need trusted adults who will listen without immediately judging, fixing, or dismissing what they are experiencing. The church should be a safe place where kids can ask hard questions, share their struggles, and work through the challenges they face. When we listen well and point them back to God’s truth, we help them understand that their faith matters in every part of their lives.

4. Encourage families to make God and the Bible the focus of their home.

The foundation of faith isn’t built only on Sunday mornings. What happens at home matters tremendously. Encourage families to pray together, read the Bible together, talk about what they are learning, and look for everyday opportunities to point their children toward God. Faith becomes more than something kids learn at church when they see it lived out at home.

5. Connect kids with godly adults outside their family.

Kids need a community of people who know them, love them, encourage them, and point them toward Jesus. A caring teacher, small-group leader, or volunteer can have an incredible impact on a child’s faith. These relationships remind kids that they are part of something bigger and that they have people cheering them on as they grow.

A Lifetime Impact

We may never know exactly how God will use the seeds we plant in a child’s life today. But we can be intentional about planting them.

Our goal isn’t simply to help kids know more Bible stories or memorize more verses. Our goal is to help them build a foundation of faith that will remain strong when life gets hard, guide them when they have difficult decisions to make, and remind them that they are never alone.

The foundation we help build in a child today can become the strength they rely on for a lifetime.
