The KidzMatter Blog/Building a Lasting, Spiritual Legacy

Much has been written on the topic of legacy building. I hesitate to add to the collection, but it is such a vital inspiration and challenge for those of us living the Christian life and striving to impact others during the course of the journey. What strategic factors are worthy of consideration? How can one influence the next generations for Christ?

It is inevitable that a legacy will be left. It is our responsibility to be sure that it is one that furthers His kingdom and His work on earth. We must be intentional and vigilant in this endeavor. We are encouraged in Scripture to pass on to future generations the truths of His Word.

Proverbs 13:22a - “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children…”

Psalm 78:4 - “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

Proverbs 20:7 - “The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.”

Psalm 145:4 - “One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.”

Joshua 4:6-7 - “…to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

Consider the following practical suggestions for daily impacting the lives of those around us. These individuals may be family, those in our ministries, or simply people that we rub shoulders with throughout the day.

Intentional mentorship, such as we see with Paul and Timothy in the New Testament, is extremely effective. If we focus on such relationships and set goals and specific objectives, our impact may be greater than a more haphazard approach. Yes, it takes time and effort, but the results are a blessing.

Stories and accounts of faith are faith-builders. Who doesn’t enjoy a real-life story that is personal and challenging? The attention of my grandchildren AND those in my Sunday School class is captured when actual narratives are shared. The Holy Spirit is able to apply the lessons in the lives of the listeners in a very memorable way.

Utilizing everyday moments is what Deuteronomy 6:6-7 is instructing us to do. “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

As we are participating in ministry, look for teaching opportunities to further the message of the gospel and all Biblical living principles. There are teachable moments in cars, over food, while walking, while working together, in the midst of fellowship, and in so many other ways.

Living a life that models one of sacrifice and obedience to God’s commands is very unusual in our culture today. That alone will make an impact. Love others. Serve others. Be honest and selfless. Be genuinely interested in others’ lives. Be transparent. Live a life of integrity. Your
example will not go unnoticed. Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

How meaningful it is to also recognize those in our lives who have impacted us greatly. Why not thank someone today who has been a spiritual mentor and guide to you? Many times, we wait until it is too late to express our gratitude and love to those who have spoken truth and encouragement into our lives. Remember to give honor to whom honor is due. (Romans 13:7)

Karen Bishir grew up hearing about Jesus' love and forgiveness from a young age, and when she came to understand the message of salvation through faith in Christ, she embraced God’s grace and forgiveness. Raised in a pastor's home, Karen has continued to live in ministry throughout her adult life alongside her husband, Terry, who pastored Liberty Baptist Church for 38 years. They are blessed with four married children and 14 grandchildren. Karen is deeply involved in Liberty’s music, women’s, and children’s ministries, and her passion for teaching has led her to serve in homeschool, Christian, and public school settings, as well as within the church. She treasures time with children and their families, and her heart’s desire is to see God working in lives across all generations.
