For parents of babies and toddlers, dropping off their child in the nursery can come with a mix of emotions. They may be excited to have a few moments to worship, but they may also wonder, Did she settle down? Did he eat? Did she play? Did someone comfort him when he cried?
That’s why communication in nursery ministry matters so much.
For children ages 0–2, there may not be a Bible lesson they can explain on the ride home or a craft they can show Mom and Dad. But there are plenty of things happening in your nursery that parents need, and want, to know about.
Communication beyond the cubby helps parents know their child was seen, known, loved, and cared for.
Tell Them More Than “They Did Great!”
“Your baby did great!” is certainly encouraging, but try giving parents one specific detail, too.
Instead of simply saying, “She had a good morning,” a volunteer might say:
“She really enjoyed looking at the books today.”
Or:
“He was a little unsure at first, but he settled down when we sang to him.”
Or:
“She smiled every time we played peek-a-boo!”
These little details reassure parents that their child wasn't just another name on a check-in label. Someone noticed their child.
Share the Little Moments
Nursery ministry is filled with small moments that may seem insignificant to us but mean everything to a parent.
Did a baby take their first few steps? Did a toddler learn a new word? Did a child who usually struggles with separation settle in more quickly this week?
Share it!
A quick comment at pickup can turn an ordinary Sunday into a meaningful connection between the nursery and the family.
Frame the Room as Spiritual Formation
Parents often assume spiritual development begins in elementary school. It is our job to communicate what is actually happening in the nursery: foundational spiritual care.
Use your physical and digital communication channels to highlight the why behind your nursery routine:
• Post a simple sign near the door outlining your monthly truth (e.g., "This month, we are whispering 'God made you and loves you' into every baby's ear during bottle time.").
• Include a short note in your weekly parent newsletter explaining how sensory play in the toddler room connects to God’s creation.
When parents realize their infants are receiving spoken blessings, hearing praise music, and experiencing God's love through attentive volunteers, their perception of the nursery shifts completely.
Remember: Parents Are Part of the Ministry
Nursery ministry isn't childcare while parents attend church. It is an opportunity to begin building a family's relationship with the church from the very beginning.
• When a parent shares a concern, listen.
• When they mention that their child is having a difficult week, remember it.
• When you see them the following Sunday, ask how things are going.
Those conversations communicate something powerful: “We care about your family.”
Create a Two-Way Dialogue
Communication should never be a one-way broadcast. Give parents clear, easy opportunities to share what is happening in their lives. Add a field to your digital check-in or keep simple prayer request cards right at the door: "How can our nursery team pray for your family this week?"
When a nursery leader sends a mid-week text checking in on a teething baby or a mom returning to work, you demonstrate that your ministry cares for the entire family unit, not just the child for an hour on Sunday.
And remind your team that pickup isn't just pickup. It's ministry.
Those few minutes at the end of the morning may be one of the most important interactions your nursery has with a family.
The cubby may hold the diaper bag. The check-in station may hold the paperwork. But your communication can carry something much more important home:
the assurance that their little one is loved and cared for.
