The KidzMatter Blog/Creating Your Family Resource Center On A Budget

Although the church plays a vital role in training and equipping families to be strong in the Lord, parents have the greatest influence on their children. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 commands us not only to love the Lord with all our heart but also to impress our faith on our children’s hearts. As families spend time together in the Word and prayer with an intentional focus on discipleship, they grow and mature in the Lord, contributing to a stronger, healthier church.

My husband and I have served in ministry for over 16 years, and our passion is to equip parents to disciple their children. Discipling our family doesn’t happen by chance; it requires intentionality. One practical way to assist parents is to provide a resource center with a curated list of books and resources. Parents have a strong desire to be the best parent possible, but many of them lack resources. Our church purchased books, D6 devotional study guides, and booklets that our own family has utilized over the years. And we did it for less than $400!

Here are some of our favorite titles we’ve discovered thanks to our church’s resource center:

  • 3 copies of "Five Reasons for Spiritual Apathy" by Rob Rienow
  • 3 copies of "Visionary Marriage" by Rob Rienow
  • 3 copies of "Tech Savvy Parenting" by Brian Housman
  • 3 copies of "Visionary Parenting" by Rob Rienow
  • 3 copies of "52 Creative Family Time Experiences" by Tim Smith
  • 3 copies of "Legacy Path" by Brian Haynes
  • 10 copies of "Parent Checkups for Mom" by Richard Ross
  • 10 copies of "Parent Checkups for Dad" by Richard Ross
  • 10 copies of the "Parenting Teens brochure"
  • First Aid for "Emotional Hurts" by Eddie Moody
  • First Aid booklets:
  • Marriage
  • Veterans
  • Addiction
  • Depression
  • Finding Help
  • Grief
  • Helping Children with Emotional Problems
  • Helping Children with Learning Problems
  • Sexual Issues
  • First Aid For Your Health: 10 Therapeutic Life Changes
  • "Smart Stepfamily" by Ron L. Deal
  • "Co-Parenting Works!" by Tammy Daughtry

  • "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge

Each church will handle the logistics of a resource center in its own unique way. Our church offers booklets and study guides to families for free; books are available for purchase.

Lena Wooten has been leading in children and family ministry for 18 years. She and her husband, Josh Wooten minister together at a church in Nashville Tn. Mother of two incredible children, Lena is also the Director of marketing for D6 Family. Lena has an absolute heart and passion for family ministry.
