Embracing the "Chreasters" at Christmas

The KidzMatter Blog/Embracing the "Chreasters" at Christmas

We’re all familiar with families who join us mainly during the holidays, particularly Christmas and Easter, whom we affectionately (and perhaps unknowingly) refer to as “Chreasters.” While it’s easy to wish they attended more regularly, it’s important to first understand why they come only on these holidays.

For many, it’s a matter of tradition; they want to create memorable experiences for their children during these culturally significant times. Others might be exploring their faith, finding these services to be a comfortable entry point. Some are tagging along with extended family to fulfill obligations and expectations. Whatever their reasons, these occasions present unique opportunities to welcome them warmly and plant seeds of faith.

Let’s not overlook the fact that Chreasters have chosen to walk through our doors. They’re not just seasonal attendees; they’re individuals seeking a meaningful experience. This is our chance to create an environment that feels welcoming and safe, where they can encounter God’s love. So, how can we make the most of these opportunities?

1. Offer Helpful Information
Ensure the church website and social media platforms provide clear, accurate, and up-to-date information. Include details about the church layout, holiday service times, parking, and other relevant information. The easier it is for Chreasters to plan their visit, the more comfortable they’ll feel attending.

2. Make a Memorable First Impression
Prepare the welcome team to greet and assist Chreaster families warmly. Consider creating a special welcome packet for visiting families that includes information about the kids' ministry, upcoming events, and perhaps a small gift or craft for the children. Additionally, offering a sweet treat or beverage (like hot chocolate, apple cider, cookies, or candy canes) before or after the service can add a special touch.

3. Engage Children During the Service
Plan interactive and meaningful activities for children during the services. This could include a craft project, a children’s message, or an opportunity for them to participate in the service. The more engaged children are, the more likely their families will return.

4. Follow Up After the Holiday
Within a week after Christmas, send a personalized email or letter to each visiting family, thanking them for attending and inviting them to upcoming events or services. Consider including a short survey to learn more about their experience and what they’re looking for in a church.

5. Offer Relevant and Enticing Next Steps
Plan family-friendly events or programs that might appeal to Chreaster families, such as a movie night, a parenting workshop, or a kids’ club. Promote these events well and make it easy for families to sign up and participate.

Building a relationship with Chreasters takes time and intentionality. These holidays are strategic opportunities to connect with families who might not otherwise come to church. By understanding their motivations, creating engaging experiences, providing easy next steps, and following up personally, churches can make a lasting impact.

After all, every connection is a chance to share the love of Christ—and that’s what Christmas is all about.
