Seeing Your Ministry Through the Eyes of a First-Time Family
When was the last time you experienced your Kids Ministry through the eyes of a first-time family?
Imagine it's Saturday night. A family has decided it's finally time to visit a church. They Google "churches near me," browse a few websites, and eventually land on yours. They look through your kids' ministry page, scroll through your social media, and ask themselves: Will our family fit in here?
Sunday morning arrives. They load everyone into the car and head to a place they've never been before. Excitement mixes with uncertainty.
As you think about their experience so far, ask yourself: Have we made this easy?
Can they find a parking spot? Is the main entrance obvious? Can they quickly find kids ministry?
Now put yourself in their shoes.
You're nervous.
You don't know anyone.
Will my child be safe?
Will they be loved?
Will they learn about Jesus?
I hope someone smiles.
I hope someone notices us.
Then the doors open.
What happens next?
After 23 years in kids ministry, I've learned that families rarely come back because of a great game or a creative craft. They come back because they felt welcomed, trusted the people caring for their children, and saw the love of Jesus in action.
Every interaction communicates something.
Every Interaction Builds Trust
Before families ever experience your curriculum, they experience your people.
From the moment they walk through the doors, they're noticing everything. Is someone smiling? Is check-in simple? Does a volunteer walk them to the classroom instead of pointing down a hallway?
At the classroom door, does the teacher greet their child by name, get down to their level, and help them feel comfortable?
Parents don't see everything that happens during class, but they'll hear about it on the drive home. Children may not remember every detail of the lesson, but they'll remember whether someone cared enough to know their name, include them, and show them the love of Jesus.
Don't Miss the Pick-Up Moment
One of the most important ministry moments happens at pick-up.
Don't simply release a child and move on to the next family.
Take a moment.
Call the child by name.
"Emma, I'm so glad you came today!"
"See you next week, Emma!"
Then tell the parent one thing you noticed.
"Emma was such a great helper today."
"He memorized part of his verse."
"She made a new friend."
Those simple words communicate something every parent longs to hear:
"We noticed your child."
Follow Up
One of the simplest ways we've found to care for first-time families is by following up during the week.
When a child visits our ministry for the first time, we send a handwritten card telling them how glad we were they came. Even better, the classroom teacher writes it. Imagine being a child who receives a card from the very person who welcomed them on Sunday. That simple act says, "You mattered to us."
It All Points to Jesus
First-time families are asking one question:
"Can I trust this church with one of the people I love most?"
Long before they evaluate your curriculum, they'll evaluate your care. Every smile, every conversation, every name remembered, and every handwritten card is an opportunity to reflect the heart of Christ.
As Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:10, "As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone." If we have the opportunity to do good, to invest in the next generation with the help of the Holy Spirit, then we should do it with intentionality.
You may think you're simply welcoming a family on a Sunday morning. God may be using that moment to begin changing a family's eternity.
Because in kids ministry, every smile, every conversation, every name remembered, and every act of kindness is pointing a family toward Jesus.
