Every August, I catch myself thinking the same thing: “I should be further along by now.”

After more than 30 years in ministry, you’d think I’d stop feeling that way. But somehow, as summer winds down and fall ministry ramps up, those thoughts have a way of creeping back in. There are always more ideas I wanted to implement, more projects I hoped to finish, more emails I meant to answer, and more conversations I wish I had already had.

Maybe you’ve been feeling that way too.

The new ministry year is knocking on the door. Fall kickoff events are just around the corner. Lesson plans still need attention, volunteer schedules still have gaps, parent communication isn’t quite finished, and that big idea you dreamed about back in January is still sitting in a notebook waiting for “someday.”

If you’re not careful, you’ll start believing a lie. The lie is this: “If I were a better leader, I’d be further along by now.” Can I encourage you today? You’re probably not behind. You’re simply standing at the beginning of another season that requires faith.

Throughout Scripture, God rarely waited until His people felt completely ready before calling them to move. Moses didn’t feel prepared. Gideon felt inadequate. Jeremiah believed he was too young. The disciples certainly didn’t have everything figured out when Jesus sent them out. Yet God wasn’t looking for perfectly prepared people—He was looking for faithful ones.

I think one of the greatest temptations for ministry leaders is confusing preparation with perfection. Yes, we should plan well. We should recruit volunteers, organize classrooms, communicate with families, and strive for excellence. Those things matter. But there comes a point when no amount of planning can replace trusting God with what only He can do.

The truth is, you cannot manufacture life change with a color-coded spreadsheet. You cannot program the Holy Spirit into a Sunday morning schedule. You cannot control who walks through your doors this fall, what burdens children are carrying, or how God may choose to work in their hearts. Your responsibility is faithfulness. God’s responsibility is the fruit.

As you prepare for a new ministry year, perhaps it’s time to ask a different question. Instead of asking, “Am I behind?” ask yourself, “What is my next faithful step?” Maybe it’s making one more phone call to a volunteer. Maybe it’s praying over your classrooms before children arrive. Maybe it’s sending an encouraging text to a weary team member. Maybe it’s simplifying a program that’s become too complicated. Or maybe it’s simply taking a deep breath and remembering that Jesus loves these children even more than you do.

Ministry has never been about having every detail perfectly in place. It’s about showing up, depending on Christ, and faithfully serving the people He places in front of you. Time and again, God has used ordinary people who were willing to take the next step of obedience, even when they didn’t feel completely ready. He has never asked us to have all the answers before He asks us to trust Him.

So, if you’re feeling behind today, give yourself a little grace. Look back and thank God for His faithfulness through every ministry season He’s already carried you through. Then look ahead—not at everything that’s left undone—but at the one next step He’s asking you to take today.

This fall won’t be successful because every box on your checklist is checked. It will be successful because you chose to faithfully follow Jesus, one step at a time.

You’re not behind.

You’re being prepared.

And that’s exactly where God can do some of His very best work.
