The KidzMatter Blog/Five Fresh Goals to Kick Off the New Year in Children’s Ministry

A new year brings fresh energy, renewed vision, and a great opportunity to reset what matters most in children’s ministry. While big changes can be exciting, meaningful progress often starts with small, intentional steps. As you launch into the new year, consider focusing on these five practical goals that can strengthen your ministry, support your team, and better serve the families God has entrusted to you.

1. Declutter & Organize
The beginning of the year is the perfect time to take a hard look at your spaces, supplies, and systems. Over time, classrooms and closets can quietly fill with broken toys, outdated curriculum, and random craft leftovers. Decluttering isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating calm, welcoming environments where kids and volunteers can focus on relationships and learning. Set aside time to clean, label, and organize. Involve your team, make it fun, and celebrate a fresh start together.

2. Host a Team Book Discussion
Investing in your volunteers is always worth it. Choose a book (such as Kim Botto’s “Boundless Hope for Every Child”) and invite your team to read it together. Book discussions encourage growth, spark meaningful conversations, and remind your volunteers they’re not just filling a role; they’re developing as leaders and disciple-makers. Bonus: it builds unity and gives everyone a shared language for ministry.

3. Create a Big-Picture Ministry Calendar
Map out your key events, teaching rhythms, and communication plans for the year so you’re not just reacting week to week. Calendarizing helps you see the big picture, align your team, and communicate clearly with families and volunteers. When everyone knows what’s coming and why it matters, your ministry can move forward with purpose instead of pressure.

4. Evaluate the Guest Experience
First impressions matter. Take time to walk through your ministry as if you were a first-time guest. Is signage clear? Are volunteers warm and attentive? Is check-in simple and secure? Ask trusted parents or volunteers to give honest feedback. Small adjustments such as clearer directions, friendly greeters, or follow-up communication can make a huge difference. A thoughtful guest experience helps families feel seen, safe, and eager to return.

5. Find Your People
Ministry leadership can feel lonely if you try to do it alone. Make it a goal this year to find your people…other children’s ministry leaders who understand your challenges and celebrate your wins. Join the KidzMatter’s I Love KidMin Community group on Facebook. Make plans to attend an in-person conference or participate in a virtual conference experience. Community brings encouragement, fresh ideas, and reminders that you’re not alone in the work God has called you to do.

As you step into the new year, remember: progress beats perfection. Choose one or two goals to start, invite your team along, and trust God to multiply your faithful efforts. Here’s to a year of clarity, connection, and meaningful ministry impact.
