The KidzMatter Blog/Keys to Discipleship Part Four: Be Light

The concept of being "light" is deeply rooted in Christianity, offering profound symbolism through the teachings of Jesus. In the Gospel of John, Jesus proclaims, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). This declaration serves as a cornerstone for understanding how we as believers are called to embody light in our lives and interactions with others.

Darkness cannot Overcome Light

Being light means illuminating the path for those who may be lost in darkness—whether that darkness manifests as despair, confusion, or moral ambiguity. Just as Jesus brought hope and clarity, we are invited to reflect that light in our own lives, becoming beacons of compassion, understanding, and truth. This is not merely about personal illumination; it's about radiating that light outward to positively influence the world.

To be light in the world requires a commitment to love and service. It means actively engaging in acts of kindness, showing empathy, and standing against injustice. In a world often overshadowed by negativity and division, those who choose to be light can inspire others to seek hope and healing. This light is not limited to grand gestures; it can be found in simple acts—a warm smile, a listening ear, or a helping hand. When we have experienced the light of Jesus in our own lives, we experience unmatched healing. Through that healing, we are able to share our journey with others, thus strengthening hope for their own future and growing the power of the Light on this Earth. The Light is Jesus, and by allowing Him to shine through us, we have the power to drive out darkness. Our glow may be the first introduction someone has to the Lord.

Moreover, being light encourages us to cultivate inner qualities that shine forth. It calls for self-reflection, humility, and a willingness to grow. As we nurture our own spiritual lives, we become more equipped to share that light with others. The more we embody love, forgiveness, and grace, the brighter our light becomes, attracting others to the warmth and comfort that Jesus provides.

In practical terms, being light can manifest in various ways. It can involve community service, supporting those in need, advocating for the marginalized, and promoting peace. It also includes fostering an environment where others feel safe and valued, allowing them to express their own light. By doing so, we create a ripple effect, encouraging those around us to shine in their unique ways. After all, there is nothing that can separate any of us from the love of God. We are each fearfully and wonderfully made in His image, and we each hold immeasurable value to our Father.

A Family of Light

Ultimately, to be light is to recognize our interconnectedness, the spiritual bonds created by our Father. Each act of kindness and compassion contributes to a larger tapestry of hope and love in the world. As we strive to walk in the light, we not only enrich our lives but also uplift those around us. In this collective journey, we can transform our communities, reflecting the divine light that Jesus exemplified, bringing us together in a family under one Father who has always had a plan for our reunion. It is through His Son Jesus that we can approach His Light and not be burned but be glorified with Him.

Being light in a world with so much darkness is both a calling and a privilege. It challenges us to rise above our circumstances and extend our hands and hearts to those who need it most. By following the example of Jesus, we can illuminate the darkness, inspire hope, and ultimately foster a world where love reigns.

She and her husband, Dallas, homeschool their four children with an emphasis on biblical foundations, world history, and life skills. The couple volunteers as Sunday School teachers for nursery through kindergarten, and Samantha has been a leader in various areas and ages within KidMin for the last six years. This year, she served as VBS director for the first time and can now say she has done every role within VBS. Samantha believes having two sons and two daughters gives her a thorough perspective on what boys and girls are facing today. The Moser family is passionate about serving Jesus and filling needs in all areas of their lives. When they aren’t at church, they enjoy camping and managing their cat, two dogs, and nine chickens.
