Move-Up Sunday is one of those days on the children’s ministry calendar that brings a mix of excitement and uncertainty. New classrooms. New teachers. New routines. For some kids, moving up is something they have been counting down to. For others, it can feel overwhelming as they leave behind a familiar teacher, classroom, or friends. That’s why Move-Up Sunday is about so much more than moving kids from one classroom to another. It’s an opportunity to remind every child: You are known. You are loved. You belong here. With a little creativity and intentionality, Move-Up Sunday can become a milestone children and families look forward to every year.

Create a Path to Belonging

One of my favorite ways to make Move-Up Sunday memorable is to turn the transition itself into an experience. Instead of kids simply trying to figure out where they need to go, create a path that helps them know exactly where they belong. A color-coded system is a simple way to do this.

One year, I created a Move-Up Sunday experience using balloons. When children checked in, each child received a picture of a balloon with their name on it. Each classroom was assigned a different color, and that same color guided them through the building. From check-in to the classroom doors, I taped down strings in each classroom’s color so kids could follow their “balloon string” all the way to their new room. When they arrived, they added their balloon to the wall outside their classroom.

Another year, I used the same concept with ice cream cones. Kids received a picture of an ice cream scoop with their name on it. Each classroom had a different colored cone waiting outside the door, and children followed the matching “drips” until they found their new classroom.

It was simple. It didn’t require a huge budget. But it turned finding a classroom into an adventure and helped children feel like they were part of something special. The best Move-Up Sunday ideas don’t just solve a logistical problem—they create a moment where a child thinks, “I know where I belong.”

Have Fun With a Theme

Move-Up Sunday is already a celebration, so don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it! A creative theme can build excitement and help kids see that moving up is something worth celebrating.

Over the years, I’ve used simple themes that turned a normal transition day into an experience. A “Moving On Up” theme pairs perfectly with balloons and the idea that kids are stepping into a new season. A “Moo-ving Up Sunday” theme brings in a fun farm feel, while “Popping Up Sunday” uses popcorn to celebrate kids moving into a new grade and a new adventure. And a “Promotion Sundaes” theme is always a favorite. Ice cream becomes the perfect way to celebrate moving up and remind kids that their next step is worth celebrating. The theme doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. The goal isn’t to create a production. The goal is to create a moment where children feel celebrated.

Celebrate the Transition

Sometimes the smallest moments become the ones kids remember. Create a celebration tunnel by having volunteers line the hallway as kids move to their new classrooms—cheering, giving high-fives, and calling kids by name as they walk through. Think about what that communicates: People are excited I am here. People are celebrating me. I belong.

You can also create a teacher handoff moment. A short note or prayer shared between outgoing and incoming teachers can help carry a child’s story forward and remind everyone that children are not just moving classrooms—they are continuing a journey of faith with people who care about them.

Help Families Feel Confident

For kids who struggle with change, preparation can make all the difference. Introduce teachers before Move-Up Sunday. Share classroom pictures. Let families know what to expect. Consider allowing children to visit their new classroom before the big day.

Parents need that preparation too. Clear communication about teachers, locations, and the morning schedule helps parents feel confident when they drop off their children.

The goal of Move-Up Sunday isn’t to create the biggest event or the most elaborate experience. The goal is to create a moment where every child walks into a new classroom and knows they belong. Because years from now, kids probably won’t remember the decorations or the giveaway they received. But they will remember the leader who knew their name. They will remember the church that celebrated them. They will remember the place where they felt loved.

And that is what makes Move-Up Sunday worth celebrating.
