I think every person who has served in kids ministry has had that drive home where they wonder, Did anything I did today even matter?

Maybe the lesson felt chaotic. Maybe the kids couldn't sit still. Maybe you repeated yourself a hundred times and still aren't sure anyone heard you. Or maybe you left church completely exhausted, wondering if anyone will even remember what happened by tomorrow.

I personally think about this every Sunday afternoon.

The truth is, KidMin can feel repetitive. Every week, we're checking kids in, cleaning up spilled snacks, reminding kids to stop wrestling with their buddy, answering the same questions, and teaching Bible stories that we've taught before. Some Sundays feel like everything goes smoothly, but other Sundays feel like you're just trying to make it to pick-up time.

On top of that, a lot of what we do goes unseen.

Parents don't always know what happened in the classroom. The church may never hear about the conversation you had with a child. Nobody applauds because you remembered every allergy, found a missing toy from home, or helped calm a crying 2-year-old. Sometimes it can feel like what we're doing isn't making much of a difference.

But that's where we have to remember that God works differently than we do. We have to remember that ultimately, it is HIS ministry.

We like to see results right away. We want to know that the lesson clicked or that a child made a life-changing decision because of something we said that morning. But most of the time, that's not how God works. More often than not, He is planting seeds that won't grow until much later. The truth is, with planting seeds, we might never see the finished product of that, or maybe just see a tiny glimpse of a bloom.

Think about the volunteer who simply remembers a child's name every single week. That child may not remember the lesson years from now, but they'll remember that someone at church knew them and cared enough to send them “fun mail” that said—Have a Great Week!

Think about the leader who takes a few extra minutes to pray with one child who is having a hard day. That prayer may seem small in the moment, but it could be exactly what that child needed to know they aren't alone.

Think about the family walking through the doors for the very first time. Maybe they're nervous. Maybe they don't know anyone. A simple smile, helping them find the right classroom, or making their child feel safe could be the reason they decide to come back next week.

Or maybe it's teaching the exact same Bible truth again.

Sometimes we wonder if we're saying the same thing over and over. But kids need repetition. They learn by hearing the true Bible stories again and again. Just because you've taught that God loves them before doesn't mean they don't need to hear it this week, too. Every lesson is another opportunity for God's Word to take root in their hearts. Each story, every truth has the opportunity to mean something different each time they hear it.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7:

"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow."

That takes so much pressure off of us.

It is not OUR ministry, it is God’s.

What a great reminder!

Our job isn't to force growth. Our job isn't to produce perfect results every Sunday. Our job is simply to be faithful with what God has given us. We plant. We water. God is the One who grows.

As I mentioned before, sometimes we get to see the fruit, but many times we won't. A child may remember something years later that we don't even remember teaching. A student may come back as a volunteer because someone invested in them when they were in elementary school. A family may stay connected to church because one volunteer made them feel welcome on their very first visit.

We'll probably never know all the ways God uses our ordinary Sundays.

Sometimes faithfulness doesn't feel exciting. It feels ordinary. It looks like showing up every week. Learning names. Sitting on the floor with kids. Singing motions even when you're tired. Having the same conversations. Loving kids who may never say thank you.

But those ordinary moments matter more than we realize.

So, the next time you leave church wondering if anyone listened or if anything you did made a difference, remember this:

God is still working.

Even when you can't see it.

Even when the room feels loud and messy.

Even when you feel unnoticed.

Never underestimate an ordinary Sunday.
