Summers in ministry tend to be hectic. I like to give our teams some much-needed time to rest and refuel, which means changing our Sunday morning routine to operate with fewer volunteers. Planning something different yet engaging can take some time. Throw in VBS, family vacations, and planning for the upcoming year, and it adds to the increased stress. Remember, I am coaching someone else’s recruits (I’ve only been on staff for seven months) and desperately want to change the culture I inherited!
One of my key objectives this year is to enhance our families' involvement in church life. Balancing various commitments is challenging for families. As we approach a new school year, I am working on a plan to help our families prepare for a year of enriching ministry. Here’s a sneak peek at what's in store:
1. Reestablish a Routine
Encouraging families to reintegrate church into their weekly routine is crucial. Consistency helps with commitment, and we want church to be a much-anticipated part of our families’ week. Communicate early and often about the new school year and all its opportunities for families.
2. Get to Know the Church Calendar
Publicize and over-communicate your activities so families can get them on their calendars. Knowing what’s ahead can help build excitement and ensure families don’t miss out on special events, holiday celebrations, community service opportunities, and family-oriented activities.
3. Reconnect with the Community
Building and maintaining relationships within the church community is essential for spiritual and social support. Provide opportunities for families to get plugged in, especially those who were missing during the summer. Encourage volunteers to reach out and help reestablish friendships with their peers and others. Provide a network of encouragement and accountability.
4. Set Spiritual Goals
Encourage families to set spiritual goals together, such as regular Bible reading, family devotions, prayer time, scripture memory, and participation in service projects. Provide tools to help with setting, starting, and achieving these goals.
5. Prepare for Sundays
Sunday mornings (and Wednesday nights) can be hectic, especially for families with young children. Share ideas on how parents can be proactive to make the process smoother—laying out clothes the night before, packing church bags, and planning breakfast in advance to cut down on chaotic and rushed mornings. A calm and organized morning routine sets a positive tone for the day and helps everyone focus on worship.
6. Emphasize the Importance of Worship
Discuss the importance of church attendance and worship with your families. Explain why it’s meaningful and how it benefits a family’s spiritual growth. Helping them understand the significance of this fosters a deeper connection and commitment to their faith.
Families have much to look forward to as a new year in church kicks off for their kids! It's a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with a supportive community, make new friends, and dive into enriching activities that teach valuable life lessons and spiritual growth. Plus, it's a great chance for parents to get involved, meet other families, and create lasting memories together. I want families to be as excited about starting a new year in church as they are about starting a new school year!
Amy Bates has been dedicated to KidMin for over 30 years. She has been happily married to Mike for 32 years, and they have two grown sons who are pursuing their passions and careers in different states. As empty-nesters, they found themselves reevaluating their lives about 18 months ago. After much prayer and consultation, they decided it was time to say goodbye to their life in Pennsylvania and hello to Grace Heartland Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. It has been quite a journey, and they are adjusting and loving their new life. One thing that amazes Amy is how God places the right people at the right time in her life!
