You really should be teaching science in church.
Our Answers in Genesis VBS always features science experiments alongside crafts, snacks, and games. Why? Well, because we don’t want children creating a false dichotomy in their minds: School is where we learn about “the real world”; church is where we learn about “spiritual things.” All of creation belongs to the Lord, and when we do science, we are merely “thinking God’s thoughts after him,” as Johannes Kepler once said.
We want them to know science confirms the Bible and that science is actually only possible because God exists. The Bible is true. Think about it—if the universe is the result of naturalistic processes over millions of years, then why would there be immaterial laws that consistently govern the universe? That’s only possible if the God of the Bible exists!
But you’re probably not a scientist, so how can you teach science to the kids in your charge? Start by helping them understand that there are two different kinds of science: observational and historical science.
• Observational science is the kind of science that builds our technology and makes medical innovations. It’s directly testable, observable, and repeatable. When kids make a baking soda volcano or create static electricity with a balloon, they are doing observational science. And that kind of science is perfectly consistent with the Bible and a great way to introduce them to the God who holds the laws of nature constant.
• Historical science is very different. This science looks at evidence in the present (e.g., rock layers and fossils) and interprets it through a specific view of the past with many layers of assumptions. You see, historical science deals with the past, and you cannot directly test, observe, or repeat the past. So what you believe about the past is going to determine your interpretation in the present.
Most scientists today come to the evidence with the worldview of millions of years and biological evolution. They interpret the evidence in the present through that lens. But that’s an interpretation based on a worldview.
Creation scientists start with the exact same evidence but come to very different conclusions about the past because we have a very different starting point: the eyewitness account of history given to us by the God who was there, who knows everything, and who doesn’t lie to us. When we start with that history of six days of creation, just a few thousand years of history, a perfect world marred by sin, a global flood, and the event at Babel, we have the proper worldview through which to interpret the evidence. As it turns out, science confirms the Bible!
Answers in Genesis has a wide variety of resources to help equip you to teach science and worldview to the kids in your church, no matter their age—it’s never too early to help them think biblically! You can find those resources at AnswersInGenesis.org.
Yes, you should be teaching science so kids grow up knowing God’s Word explains the world around them and is true . . . from the very first verse!
